What it shows

Ten stories
The top ten, in the order Hacker News publishes them. The widget doesn't re-rank anything.
Each story
Its rank, title, points, comment count and site. The title opens the story; the comment count opens the discussion on Hacker News.
Job ads
Shown the way Hacker News shows them, without points or comments.
Freshness
It asks when your board opens, every half hour while it's showing and when you come back to the tab. If Hacker News doesn't answer, the last list stays up and says what time it's from.
Where it lives
On your board, saved to your account, and the same on every computer you sign in on.

Where the stories come from

Hacker News's public API, the one its own site links to. DashSuey's server reads the top stories once every few minutes for everyone and hands each widget the same list.

Hacker News is a trademark of Y Combinator. DashSuey is not affiliated with or endorsed by Y Combinator or Hacker News, and every story links back to Hacker News.

What it does not do

  • It shows the top stories only, not new, best, Ask HN or Show HN lists.
  • It doesn't show comments, or let you vote or post.
  • It isn't a phone widget. DashSuey has no mobile app.

Questions people ask

Is there a Hacker News app?

Hacker News is a website, news.ycombinator.com. The phone apps and home screen widgets that turn up in searches are made by independent developers. DashSuey's Hacker News widget isn't a phone app: it sits on your DashSuey board in the browser, on any computer you sign in on.

Is there a Hacker News widget for my computer?

This is one. Add it to your DashSuey board and the top ten stories stay in view next to the rest of your widgets, with nothing to install.

How are stories ranked on Hacker News?

Hacker News's own FAQ says "The basic algorithm divides points by a power of the time since a story was submitted," and that flags, anti-abuse software and moderators also play a part. The widget ranks nothing itself. It shows the top stories in the order Hacker News publishes them.

What is Hacker News?

A news site where people share and vote on links about technology and startups, at news.ycombinator.com. Y Combinator owns and funds it. It's a different site from the similarly named security news site.

How often does the widget update?

It asks for the top stories when your board opens, every half hour while the board is showing, and when you come back to the tab. A story that has just climbed the front page can take about half an hour to appear. If Hacker News is slow to answer, the last list stays up and says what time it's from.

Can I see new stories, Show HN or Ask HN?

Not in this widget; it shows the top stories only. Ask HN and Show HN posts appear when they're among the top stories, and each comment count opens its discussion on Hacker News.

Can I put Hacker News's RSS feed on my board instead?

Yes, with the News Feed widget, which starts on Hacker News's RSS feed. It shows how long ago each story was posted and lets you pick how many, but not points or comment counts.

Is DashSuey part of Hacker News or Y Combinator?

No. DashSuey isn't affiliated with or endorsed by Y Combinator or Hacker News. The widget reads Hacker News's public API and links every story back to Hacker News.

Put it on your own board. It saves to your account.
