How the times are worked out
From the sun's position for your place, with the SunCalc formulas, rounded to the nearest minute. They match the US Naval Observatory's times for the same place to within a minute.
The times are shown on your computer's clock. For a place in another time zone, that is the place's sunrise told in your own time.
What it does not do
- It doesn't show golden hour or blue hour.
- It shows today, not a calendar of other days.
- It shows civil dawn and dusk, not nautical or astronomical twilight.
Questions people ask
What time is sunset today?
The widget at the top of this page shows it for the place your connection suggests. On your board it works it out for the place you type, and moves to the next day on its own.
How many hours of daylight are there today?
The widget shows it as day length, in hours and minutes, beside sunrise and sunset.
How long after sunset is it dark?
Civil dusk, when the sun is 6 degrees below the horizon and most outdoor things need a light, usually comes about half an hour after sunset. The widget on your board shows it as Dusk. Full darkness comes later, after nautical and astronomical twilight, which it does not show.
What are dawn and dusk?
Civil dawn and civil dusk: the moments the sun's center is 6 degrees below the horizon, before sunrise and after sunset. Between them and sunrise or sunset is civil twilight.
What is solar noon?
The moment the sun is highest in the sky. It is rarely 12:00 on the clock.
Are the times in my time zone?
Yes: they're shown on your computer's clock. For a place in another time zone, that is the place's sunrise told in your own time.
How accurate are the times?
Within a minute of the US Naval Observatory's times for the same place. They're worked out from the sun's position with the SunCalc formulas and rounded to the nearest minute.
Does it work near the poles?
Yes. Under the midnight sun it says "Sun up all day", and in polar night "Sun down all day".
Is there a sunrise and sunset widget for my computer?
Sunrise & Sunset runs in your browser as part of your DashSuey board, so it works the same on Windows, a Mac or a Chromebook, with nothing to install. The board, and the place you set, follow you to every computer you sign in on.
Does it show golden hour?
No. It shows sunrise, sunset, solar noon, day length and civil dawn and dusk.
