How it works things out

Every conversion is arithmetic in your browser, from exact definitions: an inch is 25.4 millimeters, a pound is 0.45359237 kilograms, and a US gallon is 3.785411784 liters. Nothing is looked up online, so an answer never waits on the network.

Temperature has its own formulas, because the scales start in different places, which is why 0 °C is 32 °F. Screen units go through the inch at 96 pixels to the inch, which is what a browser means by an inch. Print work usually means 300, and you can set that in the widget.

What it does not do

  • It doesn't convert money. The Currency Rates widget shows exchange rates.
  • It can't turn cups into grams. That needs the weight of the ingredient.
  • It keeps one pair per widget. Add a second converter for a second pair.
  • It isn't an offline app. The sums need no network, but the board has to load first.

Questions people ask

What does the Unit Converter convert?

Length, temperature, weight, volume in metric and US measures, and screen units: pixels, inches, centimeters and points. Pick one in the widget, then two units. The full list is in the table above.

How do you convert cm to inches?

Divide by 2.54, because an inch is exactly 2.54 centimeters. So 3 cm is 1.1811 in and 10 cm is 3.937 in. In the widget, set Length to centimeters and inches and type in either box.

What is 1 Celsius in Fahrenheit?

Multiply by 9/5 and add 32. 1 °C is 33.8 °F, 20 °C is 68 °F, and -40 is the same on both scales.

Is 1 cup the same as 250 ml?

Not a US cup. A US cup is 236.5882 ml, and 250 ml is 1.0567 US cups. 250 ml is the metric cup some other countries use. The widget's cups and spoons are all US measures.

How many pixels are in 1 inch?

It depends on the pixels per inch. A browser counts 96 to the inch, so 100 px is 1.0417 in. Print work usually means 300. The widget uses 96 unless you change Pixels per inch in its settings; the one on this page is fixed at 96.

Can it convert cups to grams?

No. Cups measure volume and grams measure weight, and getting from one to the other needs the ingredient's density. The widget keeps volume and weight apart.

Can it convert currency?

No. The Currency Rates widget shows European Central Bank reference rates, with a range over time.

Does it work offline?

The sums happen in your browser and make no request, so once your board is open a conversion never waits on the network. The board itself loads from the web, so it isn't an offline app.

Is there a unit converter I can keep on my desktop?

Windows has one in its Calculator app. The Unit Converter widget sits on your DashSuey board instead, which is a web page, so it works the same on a Mac, a PC or a work laptop, with nothing to install.

Will my units be there on my other computers?

Yes. The pair you pick, on the widget or in its settings, is saved with your board, and your board follows you to every computer you sign in on. The number in the box starts at 1 each time.

Put it on your own board. It saves to your account.
