Sticky Note
Every tile here is live. The map on this board keeps your clicks in this tab only.
What you can do
- Mark a state
- Click it, and click again to take the mark off. The smallest eastern states, from Delaware to Vermont, also get a labeled square beside the map, so they are easy to hit.
- The count
- The header reads "N of 50" and the percent of the 50, with a bar under it. It is a count of states, not of land.
- Map or list
- One click apart in the header. The list is every state as a checkbox row, the same marks as the map.
- Include DC
- Washington, DC is a federal district, so it is left off by default. Switch it on to mark it and count out of 51.
- Labels
- Two-letter state labels: automatic (when the map is big enough to read them), always or never.
- Keyboard
- Tab to the map, then use the arrow keys to move from state to state, and Enter or Space to mark one.
- Where it lives
- On your board, saved to your account, and the same on every computer you sign in on.
Where the map comes from
The shapes are the US Census Bureau's 2017 cartographic boundary files, a US government work, by way of the us-atlas package. They're drawn in your browser, with no mapping service behind them.
On your board, the states you mark are saved with the board to your account, like every widget's settings. That's how the same map shows on every computer you sign in on.
What it does not do
- It keeps the list you make. It doesn't read your phone's location history.
- It has one kind of mark: no lived in, want to go or counties, and no territories.
- It doesn't share, print or export the map.
Questions people ask
How can I check which states I've visited?
Mark them on a map as you remember them. Visited States gives you a US map where each click marks a state, and the header counts them out of 50. It keeps the list you make; it does not look anything up for you.
How many states have I been to?
Click each state you have been to and the header shows the total, "N of 50", and the percent of the 50. Switch on DC and the count is out of 51.
Does Washington, DC count as a state?
No. DC is a federal district. Visited States leaves it off and counts out of 50 by default. Switch Include DC on to mark it; the count is then out of 51.
What counts as visiting a state?
There's no official rule. Some people count any state they set foot in, some only a night's stay, and airport layovers are the usual argument. The widget has one mark per state, so pick your rule and keep to it.
Is there a map that shows where I've traveled?
Not on its own. Visited States is a map you fill in yourself; it doesn't read your phone's location history.
Is my map saved?
Yes, with your DashSuey board, on your account. That is how it shows on your other computers. The map at the top of this page keeps your clicks in this tab only.
Can I see my states map on another computer?
Yes. DashSuey is a web page you sign into, so the board and its map open in any browser on any computer you sign in on. There's no phone app.
Is there a checklist of all 50 states?
Yes. Switch the tile to List and every state is a checkbox row, which is handy for Rhode Island and Delaware. It is the same list as the map.
