What it shows
- The word
- One English word a day, from a list DashSuey keeps, taken in order, so no word repeats until the list comes round.
- The definition
- From free dictionaries, asked in turn: the Free Dictionary API, Datamuse and Wiktionary. The card names the one that answered and links to it.
- Sometimes more
- When the Free Dictionary API answers, a phonetic spelling and an example sentence.
- When it changes
- At midnight on your computer, on its own, even on a board left open.
- Where it lives
- On your board, saved to your account, and the same on every computer you sign in on.
Where the words come from
DashSuey keeps its own list of words, and each day takes the next one. The definition comes from a free dictionary, and the card says which, with a link to its page for the word.
The dictionaries are other people's work. When one is down, the widget asks the next.
What it does not do
- It has no audio, difficulty levels or list of past words.
- It doesn't show Merriam-Webster's or Dictionary.com's word of the day; the word is DashSuey's own pick.
- It isn't a phone widget. DashSuey has no mobile app.
Questions people ask
How do I add a word of the day widget?
Open the widget picker on your DashSuey board, find Word of the Day in the Reading group and add it. It has no settings, so there is nothing else to do.
Is there a word of the day widget for my computer?
DashSuey's is a widget on a web page, so it works in the browser on any computer you sign in on, with nothing to install. It isn't a phone widget: DashSuey has no mobile app.
What is today's word of the day?
Every dictionary picks its own, so there is no single answer. The widget shows a word from DashSuey's own list, with a definition from a free dictionary.
Where do the definitions come from?
From three free dictionaries, asked in turn: the Free Dictionary API, Datamuse and Wiktionary. The card names the one that answered and links to it.
Does it show how to say the word?
Sometimes. When the Free Dictionary API answers, the card shows a phonetic spelling and an example sentence; when another dictionary answers, it shows the part of speech and the definition. There is no audio.
Can I choose the difficulty, or see earlier words?
No. The widget has no settings and keeps no list of past words.
